Sainte-Chapelle Visit Guide: the Stained Glass Jewel

The Sainte-Chapelle is a small Gothic chapel on the Île de la Cité, and stepping into its upper level is one of the most striking moments in Paris. Climb the narrow spiral stair from the lower chapel to the upper level, where the windows reach almost to the ceiling. Late morning to early afternoon on a bright day gives the strongest colour as the sun moves across the glass. Bring a little patience for the security check, since the chapel shares its entrance area with the law courts on the same island.

Combine with the Conciergerie

Next door stands the Conciergerie, a former royal palace turned revolutionary prison where Marie-Antoinette was held. A combined ticket covers both and they sit a two-minute walk apart, so most visitors pair them. Together they make an easy half day on the Île de la Cité, close to Notre-Dame and the flower market.
