Musee du Quai Branly

The Musee du Quai Branly Jacques Chirac is the great Paris museum devoted to the arts and civilisations of Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas. Set on the banks of the Seine just steps from the Eiffel Tower, it gathers tens of thousands of objects that tell the human story far beyond the Western canon. The building itself, designed by Jean Nouvel, is part of the experience, wrapped in a living wall of greenery and surrounded by a wild garden that feels like a small forest in the centre of the city.

Inside, a long curving ramp leads you into a darkened, atmospheric main gallery where the four continents flow into one another. You move among carved masks and ancestral figures from Africa, textiles and feather work from the Americas, sculptures and ritual objects from Oceania and intricate craft from across Asia. Highlights include the spectacular Oceanian and African collections and rotating temporary exhibitions that dig deep into specific cultures and themes. The lighting and staging give the objects real presence and mystery.

Booking a ticket online in advance is the easiest way to visit, as it lets you choose your time and skip the ticket desk queue. The museum is large, so allow a couple of hours at least. Mornings and late afternoons on weekdays are usually calmer, while the rooftop and garden are lovely in good weather. Combining your visit with the nearby Eiffel Tower is popular, though doing the museum first and the tower later helps you avoid the busiest crowds.

The location is excellent for sightseeing. The closest options are the Alma Marceau and Iena stops on Metro line 9, the RER C stop at Pont de l Alma, and several bus routes along the river. The riverside setting means you can walk straight from the museum towards the Eiffel Tower, the Trocadero or a stroll along the Seine, making it easy to build a full day around this corner of Paris.
