Paris Museums by Season: When to Visit
The Louvre receives 9 million visitors a year, but they do not arrive evenly. July and August concentrate 30 percent of annual traffic. January and February see less than 8 percent. The season you pick is the biggest factor in queue length, museum atmosphere and even ticket availability.
This guide breaks down the year by quarter, explains what to expect in each season, and tells you the best month to visit each top Paris museum.
Winter: January, February, March
Winter is the off season. The Louvre, the Orsay and the Orangerie have walk in availability most days. Queues at the security check are 10 to 15 minutes versus 45 minutes in summer. The Orangerie even goes free the first Sunday from October to March.
The downsides are short daylight hours and cold rain. The upside is that the Marais museum walk is more pleasant when the streets are not crowded. February is the absolute calmest month for the Louvre.
Spring: April, May, June
Spring brings the first big crowds. April is still manageable. May is the start of high season. June is full peak. Booking 2 weeks ahead for the Louvre and the Orangerie becomes mandatory by mid May.
Spring is also the best season for the Rodin Museum garden, when the roses bloom in May. The Marmottan Monet rotates a special exhibition usually opening in March.
Summer: July, August
Summer is the worst time to visit Paris museums on a tight schedule. The Louvre records 35,000 visitors a day in July. The Orsay sells out a week ahead. Lines at the Eiffel Tower spill into the Trocadero gardens.
If you must travel in summer, book 3 weeks ahead, target the first opening slot at 9:00 and prefer the smaller museums like the Cluny, the Rodin and the Picasso for any afternoon visit.
Fall: September, October, November
September is the best month overall. Crowds drop sharply after the French school year starts. Weather is still warm. The light on the Seine at golden hour is the prettiest of the year.
October and November bring rain but also the best temporary shows. The Orsay typically opens its main fall exhibition in late September. The Pompidou launches its winter contemporary show in October.
Best month per top museum
Louvre: February for calm, late September for weather. Orsay: September for the fall show, January for calm. Orangerie: November for the Water Lilies in cool light. Pompidou: October for fresh exhibitions.
Rodin: May for the rose garden. Picasso: any month except August. Cluny: any month, never crowded. Quai Branly: October for the special evening events. Marmottan: March for the spring exhibition opening.
The best Paris museum trip is not necessarily a summer trip. February gives you the Louvre with breathing room. September gives you the Orsay and the Pompidou with fresh shows. Time your visit to the season of the museum you came to see.
